It was fascinating to see how the atmosphere of the space changed as I installed each piece, carefully selected by myself, on the neutrally toned, dark brown wall. On one side of the wall, the mood is completely still, with not a hint of emotion. A sense of quiet beauty emerges, as if black-and-white photographs are gently whispering stories of the past to the audience.
In contrast, the artworks hung on the opposite wall each express their own individual voice, creating a sense of communication. The vivid colours evoke human dynamism and vitality, yet, just as joy and pain coexist in life—between these two walls stands a dark, shadowy painting by Seonkyu Choi that holds the middle ground in terms of tone and saturation.
The starting point of this exhibition was the simple joy of sharing a cup of coffee with someone in everyday life. I initially planned to curate works that centered around those warm, gentle moments. However, after unexpectedly encountering a wide range of works from the artists around me, my thoughts began to shift. Life is never one-dimensional, and joy always exists side by side with pain. I started to think that a seemingly heavy, melancholic painting, perhaps one that may not appear to suit a café setting, could, by chance, offer someone unexpected comfort. This exhibition sits somewhere between that simple joy and those weighty emotions. Perhaps guests can find a sense of empathy and solace in the range of feelings present here.
내가 직접 선정하고 고른 작품들을 고동색의 뉴추얼한 벽에다가 하나씩 설치하니깐 공간에 분위기가 달라지는것이 참 신기했다. 벽 한곳엔 기색하나 없이 적막한 분위기 혹은 흑백 사진이 고요하게 과거의 이야기를 관객에게 속삭이듯 고요하게 아름다운 분위기를 연상시킨다. 반면에 그 맞은편 벽에 걸린 작품들은 다 하나같이 자신의 개별적인 목소리를 내며 소통을 일으킨다. 강렬한 색깔들이 인간의 역동성과 활기를 연상시키지만 인생의 기쁨과 함께 고통스러움이 함께 공존하듯, 양쪽의 채도를 중간의 암흑같은 선규의 페인팅이 설치되어 있다. 이 전시의 시발점은 일상의 누군가와 커피 한잔을 마시며 느끼는 소소한 기쁨 그리고 그런 따스한 순간들을 중심으로 작품을 고르려 했다. 그러나 예상치 않게 내 주변에 아티스트들에게 다양한 작품들을 마주하면서 나의 생각은 많이 바뀌었다. 삶은 그렇게 결코 일처원적이지 않으며, 언제나 기쁨은 고통과 나란히 존재한다는것. 누군가는 카페에 적절하지 않아 보일지 모르는 그런 다소 무겁고 무게가 있는 우울해 보이는 페인팅에서 우연치 않게 위로를 받을지도 모른다는 생각을 했다. 이 전시는 그 소소한 기쁨과 그 묵직한 감정 그 사이 어디쯤, 손님들이 다양한 감정을 공감을 얻고 위안을 받을수 있지 않을까?
